There’s no coffee on Mars

No shite!

I am not moving to Mars. Neither should you. But if we keep consuming caffeine from paper cups, we might have to. On an average, Australia throws away 100,000 paper cups every hour — enough to fill a Melbourne tram. Twice.

Thanks to the waterproof coating on the inside, all these cups end up in a landfill.

Luckily, there is something we all can do about this. It is simple. Get a reusable cup. To make it even simpler, here is a short list of my favourites.

Frank Green

These are more than just reusable cups. If you are like me and want something more personalised, something that speaks your style, this is the one. It comes in two sizes and countless colour combinations — grab any that floats your boat.

That isn’t even the best part, the cup has its own payment system. Yes, you can pay with your cup — what is this trickery? Frank Green calls it CafePay. And if you are an Optus customer, you can use Optus Pay anywhere Visa payWave is accepted. This is a god damn SmartCup!

Oh, and FYI — I have dropped this cup on a concrete floor with coffee in it. And nothing. Not a single drop of precious brown liquid was wasted. The cup has been going about its life like nothing happened. Impressive.

Fressko Flask

Versatility is the keyword here. The number of uses you can put the Fressko Flask to, is ridiculous. Most reusable cups let you carry coffee (duh), this lets you brew! I pop some coarsely ground beans in the filter, fill up the flask with cold water and leave it in the fridge overnight. Next morning, I take the filter off and my cold brew is good to go.

Not everyone is a cold brew fan. I get it (actually, I don’t). My partner uses the Fressko Flask to infuse and create detox water. You can use it to brew tea or get rid of the filter altogether and use it as a takeaway cup. Needless to say, the double-walled glass with the bamboo lid looks stunning, keeps your drinks hot or cold for hours, and it is leak-proof. Win-win.

To me, JOCO Cups are all about attention to detail — which is why it has made it to this list. The artisan blown borosilicate glass is dishwasher and microwave safe. The thermal sleeve provides good grip and does a great job of keeping your hands cool. And the range of colours to match your style is endless!

But what sets it apart is its lid. It has a splash-proof design (prevents your coffee from splashing around) with a nose-dome feature which means — no more awkward nose-lid collisions. JOCO is a great and simple, everyday coffee cup to get.

My pick?

All the three are great alternatives to everyday paper cups. In fact, these are probably the best ones. It really comes down to what is important to you — innovation, versatility, or simplicity.

Work with us. And we aren't moving to Mars. You’re welcome.
